Christmas dinner setting in Uchaf

Christmas dinner setting in Uchaf

The Hive, Aberaeron, on the pier.

This is a casual spot with an excellent neighborhood feel to it.  The food tastes like home cooking and there is plenty of it!  Lately, the menu has tended towards grills.  Do not miss the homemade honey ice cream.  There is live music on many evenings.  The mezzanine level is a local gathering spot to watch Welsh teams on Telly.  If you do the walk from Llannachaeron estate to Aberareon, this is a great place to stop to be properly re-fueled fro the walk back towards Ffynnon Oer.

Harbourmaster, Aberaeron, also on the pier.

This is sort of  like a bistro.  Everyone loves it – except me.  Personally, I think the bar area is loud and overrated.  There is a restaurant. It requires a reservation.  If I am going out for a special night I would rather spend my money at Ty Mawr.  I include it here simply because so many guests rave about it.

The Feathers, Aberaeron, on the square.

Has a very nice fire in the pub/lounge.  Nice restaurant.  Grandparents will enjoy this restaurant because of the relatively quiet atmosphere.

Prince of Wales Pub, 1a Queen Street, Aberaeron

This pub recently re-opened under new management.  The proprietors, Merv and Liz, are natives to Aberaeron having returned after careers elsewhere.  Dog friendly!!!!!  The Sunday carvery is very good value.  It is nice to see all the local folks catching up on the happenings by hanging out at one another’s tables.  Welcoming to all.  This is on a backstreet off of the harbour area.  I have left postcards in the cottages about this place.

Rhos Yr Hafod, Cross Inn Llanon

Although not within walking distance this is what I call our “local.”  It is about a 10 minute drive from Ffynnon.  It is a delightful rural pub that is cosy in the winter and has a nice outside spot to soak up the sun in the summer.  It has recently been purchased by a father & daughter team.  They serve local real ale.  The real ale menu changes weekly.  To get there take the road outside of the house towards Llanryhstud/Aberystwyth, i.e. from the front door turn right and stay on this road (6 miles or so) until you get to Cross Inn, the pub is on the right.

Ty Mawr,  Cilcennin.  (I love this place for date night!!!!!)

This is a country house restaurant.  4-star dining on local produce and meats.  It is expensive but worth it for a special night out.  They have a lovely cinema in the basement known locally as “flicks in the sticks.”  Have dinner and then order a movie from their collection.

Lloyds,  Lampeter, Chippy.

Excellent, family run business in Lampeter — been there forever!.

Lampeter Townhall, Deli & Cafe.

Excellent for morning coffee or afternoon tea break.  Don’t miss the Welsh Quilt museum next door.

SOsban Fach, Lampeter

Cafe in Lampeter serves breakfast all day and hearty panini, baked potatoes, etc.

Organic Food Center, Industrial Estate, Lampeter.

This is THE BEST for a wide range of organic food, olives, sweets, great selection of wine & cheese, and the BEST BREAD and most-like French Baguette.  Get there early, they sell out of fresh bread.

COnti’s Cafe, Lampeter

Good place for coffee and Italian-style ice cream.

The Black Lion Hotel, Lampeter

This is sort of an “all purpose” pub & restaurant– something for everyone.  The bar is appropriately local with cozy sofas for sitting and some fruit machines to add to the general ambiance.   The restaurant is on the other side of the bar and easy to access without having to push through the crowd on the pub side.  Good quality food is the draw for families on Saturday afternoons and Sunday.  Soups are usually very good.

Shapla Tandori, Lampeter

Extensive menu, bar, and lively atmosphere on the week-ends.  Gets the job done when you are craving a curry, but not extraordinary.  Service can be slow if the local rugby team or other party is present (a frequent occurrence.)  Some nights, tho, it can be completely empty and on these instances you can expect very attentive service.  They do take away.  Phone before hand or else be prepared to have a drink standing at the bar.

The Daffodil, Inn and Country Pub.  Llandysul.

If you are coming or going from the coast road,  this is a nice place to stop.  A sunday dinner or “date” kind of place.

Le Casablanca, Aberystwyth.

Much-loved, tiny, restaurant serving middle-eastern food.  Bring your own bottle.

Diablo’s, Carmarthen.

Trendy food, great cocktails, busy, fun.
